Butcher shop (attempt 1) 1/19/11

Today is Wednesday.  No school for Thomas.  Wednesday is a day for extracurricular activities for children (sports, music, etc.) usually done outside of school.
I’d finally worked up the nerve to visit la boucherie. Thomas and I enjoyed lounging around in our PJ’s most of the morning.  After lunch I decided I was ready to take on the butcher.  I get to the store and it’s closed.  I read the hours.  It’s a big sign, but I’ve noticed that it usually takes more words in French than English to make a sentence.  Thanks to the tutor I can read the days of the week and the hours.  I also figured out that it says “shop open daily.”    The hours are from 7:30am to 12:45pm and then from 3:30pm to 7:30pm.  The store was supposed to reopen after lunch at 3:30pm.  My watch said it was 3:35pm.  OK?!?  Maybe they’re running late today.  A little inconvenient, but no big deal.  Thomas and I walk around in the 38 degree weather for a little while and come back at 4:00pm.  The place is still closed.  I take a picture of the sign and march back home.  My one mission for today and I failed.  GRRR.
Tonight was tutoring night.  The first thing he wants to know is if I went to the butcher shop.  I show him the picture of the sign on the front door and explain that I really did try.   He had to take a second look at the photo but he finally read the bottom of the sign.  It says they are closed on Wednesday afternoon, Saturday afternoon and all day on Sunday.  If the shop is closed all day Sunday and only open ½ days twice a week…..DON’T PUT “shop open daily” on your sign.
On the bright side, the tutor said that after he left on Monday night, he was thinking about how to request “chicken beast” from a butcher.  Then he remembered “blanc de poulet.”  That’s simple enough!!!!  Men!  Like they go grocery shopping.  What was I thinking?  Well, at least I didn’t go in to the shop and grab my breasts.  (Also, thank goodness for Facebook.  My friend Melanie saw my post and told me how to say my request the correct way.  Just wish I’d asked her sooner.)
