Open Market 1/22/11

Today was our first trip to the market.  I’ve seen them and walked through them, but never with the intention of buying anything.  Today, we had goals.  We did great and it was a lot of fun.  So many fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and meats I can not even begin to tell you everything we saw.  I did see more meat than I wanted to.  It kind of surprised me.  After the trip to the butcher was so uneventful, I was really shocked at some of the things I saw displayed today.  Needless to say, once I realized what I was looking at, my pace increased quite a bit.
I’ve never had fresh mozzarella or ricotta.  I admit that after today I’m a HUGE fan.  I’m not very adventurous in the food department so we stared out with things we knew.  There were tons to choose from and I’m sure that as time goes on I’ll just have to try some of the other things I saw.

Thomas picked out what he called “mini burgers.”  They were actually macaron’s.  There’s a great picture of them on Wikipedia( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macaron )  I think my son must have been from France in his previous life.  He is eating more here than ever before.  When he saw the maracons he said “oh I love those.”  So of course I had to go back and get a few.  He picked out the blue and green ones and let Bryan and me know that we were not allowed to eat those.
I’m not a big fan of flowers.  You spend a lot of money and they’re usually dead within 3 days.  The flowers today were just too pretty to pass up.  (Not to mention cheap.)  I figured we needed some color in our house.  It has been so drab and cold here lately.  It was around 32 degrees while we were shopping.
After our outing this morning we were all so cold we ducked into a bilingual book store to thaw out.  There I found some great recipe books that I hope will help me cook with the ingredients I find here.  I also got a book called “Discover Lyon” so that anyone who comes to visit can see all the sites.  Plus my favorite, a book called “A Year In The Merde.”  (That would have been a great title for this blog.)   Afterward, we were still chilled to the bone, so we decided to stop at a café for hot chocolate.  That turned into lunch.  It was great, but I’m still not used to 2 ½ hour lunches.  Thomas was great though!  He’s turning into such a wonderful little man.
Finally, we ended our day with more shopping at Castorama (a store like Lowe’s).  None of us really wanted to go, but we knew that it was a must, since nothing is open tomorrow.
Tonight, I used most of my fresh ingredients to make Lasagna and a salad.  WOW!  OK I get it.  When they say things taste better with fresh ingredients…it’s true.  I’ve not had that since living with my parents and getting veggies out of their garden.
